The Myth of Work/Life Balance

September 24, 2025

“Balance is not better time management, but better boundary management. Balance means making choices and enjoying those choices.”

~ Betsy Jacobson

Hello, Dear Friends! This week, let's chat about a topic that's close to many of our hearts: the elusive concept of work/life balance. As a Realtor® in the bustling Denver area, I've had my fair share of wrestling with this idea.

Traditionally, we tend to think of work/life balance as a seesaw where work sits on one end and personal life on the other. The common belief is that achieving a perfect equilibrium between the two - whether it's a 50/50, 60/40, or some other ratio - equates to a balanced life. But, here's a thought: What if we've been looking at it all wrong?

Over the past year, I've discovered that the real secret to work/life balance isn't about how much time we allocate to each. Instead, it's about how we feel about the time we spend. Imagine working 80 hours a week but loving 78 of those hours. That's a joy-filled life, isn't it? Conversely, you could be working just 20 hours a week but despising every minute of it, alongside another 40 hours of unenjoyable home tasks. That's hardly what we'd call balanced, even though the hours are fewer.

My experience in real estate has been an eye-opener. I found myself working more hours than I ever did in my previous corporate job. Yet, surprisingly, I feel closer to an ideal work/life balance. Why? Because most of what I do doesn't feel like "work" in the traditional sense. I'm passionate about helping people find their dream homes, about the thrill of the market, and the joy of being part of someone's life-changing moments. The few tasks that feel like a chore are far outweighed by the parts of my job that bring me excitement and fulfillment.

So, here's my take: The key to finding your ideal work/life balance lies in maximizing your enjoyment, regardless of whether you're working or engaging in personal activities. It's about finding joy in what you do and who you are. When you love what you do, the old saying rings true - you'll never work a day in your life.

Everyone's balance is different. What works for me might not work for you, and that's okay. The journey to finding your balance is personal and unique. It's about focusing on making the most out of every moment, every experience, rather than counting the hours spent on each activity.

In conclusion, as you navigate your own path to work/life balance, remember this: balance is less about the division of time and more about the quality of time. Find what you love, pursue it with passion, and watch as the scales of work and life balance themselves in a way that brings you happiness and fulfillment.

Until next time, keep striving for that balance that suits you best, and remember, whether you're buying, selling, or just dreaming, I'm here to help make your real estate journey enjoyable and balanced. Here's to discovering harmony between your professional and personal life!
