This type of battery can pose significant risks due to its susceptibility to thermal runaway—a condition where an increase in temperature can lead to accelerated chemical reactions inside the battery, potentially causing it to catch fire or explode.
Lithium-ion batteries are known for their efficiency and are ubiquitous in our daily lives, powering everything from laptops to electric vehicles. However, their energy-dense nature makes them vulnerable to overheating and, subsequently, thermal runaway, especially if they are damaged, improperly charged, or exposed to extreme temperatures. To prevent such incidents, it is crucial to store these batteries safely, ideally in a fire-resistant container and away from combustible materials.
Five Lesser-Known Household Safety Tips
1. Avoid Overcharging Gadgets: Lithium-ion batteries should not be charged beyond their capacity. It's advisable to disconnect devices once fully charged and avoid leaving them plugged in overnight. Maintaining a charge between 20% and 80% can significantly enhance battery safety.
2. Proper Placement of Charging Points: When installing charging stations for electric vehicles or gadgets, ensure they are placed far from combustible materials. Ideally, charging points should be outdoors or in well-ventilated areas to reduce the risk of fire.
3. Monitor Appliance Hoses Regularly: Check the hoses on appliances like washing machines and dishwashers periodically for leaks. Minor leaks can go unnoticed and lead to significant water damage or mold growth over time.
