Energy, Mindset, and the Company We Keep

Positive Energy Changes More Than You Think
Shanna Schmidt  |  May 28, 2026

The energy you keep and surround yourself with, determines your path.

I spent yesterday with our mastermind group doing something I probably would have rolled my eyes at ten years ago. We had an energy assessment session with an energy healer. To say I'm intrigued would be an understatement.

Somewhere between conversations about emotional frequencies, positive energy, group dynamics, and a room full of high-performing real estate professionals discussing spirit animals, something clicked for me.

We spend SO much time managing calendars, business goals, relationships, stress, responsibilities, and expectations. Yet, we spend almost no time thinking about the energy we bring into rooms...or the energy we allow around us every single day.

Friends, I'm here to tell you it matters more than most people realize.

You've probably experienced it without even thinking about it. You walk into a meeting and immediately feel tension before anyone says a single word. You spend an hour with someone and leave feeling completely drained...or inspired...or lighter...or strangely anxious for no obvious reason.

Energy is real, whether you want to call it intuition, emotional contagion, mindset, frequency, or simply human connection.

One of the most interesting parts of the session centered around how much influence we actually have over our own energy and experiences. It wasn't really the "just think happy thoughts and your taxes will disappear" kind of guidance. Instead, it was more about a sense of awareness, focus, openness, and intention to shape the opportunities we identify and pursue.

What we focus on tends to grow. If you spend every day expecting conflict, disappointment, negativity, or failure, your brain becomes emotionally good at finding evidence to support it. On the flip side, when you actively look for possibility, connection, gratitude, opportunity, and growth, life starts opening up in bright new ways. It's not magic, but it is noticeable.

It is not lost on me how dangerously close this sounds to something stitched on a farmhouse pillow sold on Etsy...but stay with me for a minute.

There is actual science around emotional energy and human connection. Researchers have studied how emotions spread socially, how stress impacts entire groups, and how people unconsciously mirror emotional states. We absorb more from each other than we realize.

That brings me to one of the biggest takeaways from the session: Who you spend time with matters. Not a little, but A LOT.

The people around you influence your outlook, your confidence, your emotional baseline, your ambition, your stress level, and even what feels possible for your life.

Spend enough time with people who constantly complain, expect the worst, criticize everyone, and operate from fear, and eventually you start shrinking without even realizing it.

Spend time with people who are curious, optimistic, grounded, encouraging, emotionally aware, and growth-oriented, and you'll see a positive shift. You start thinking bigger, feeling calmer, and trusting yourself more. You become more open to opportunities instead of continuously bracing for disaster.

Positive energy isn't about pretending life is perfect. It's not toxic positivity or ignoring reality because we all know hard things will still happen. We know stress will never cease to exist. Some days are still going to be absolute garbage.

However, positive energy is more about what you choose to feed.

Do you choose to feed fear or possibility?
Do you choose to feed resentment or gratitude?
Do you choose to feed drama or growth?
Do you choose to feed scarcity or abundance?

Most importantly, are the people around you feeding those things, too?

One story shared during the session really stuck with me. It was about an experiment that reportedly showed a man's white blood cells responding emotionally in sync with him...even after the cells had been physically separated from his body. Whether every detail of the experiment holds up scientifically isn't even the main point here, from my perspective. What truly fascinates me is the bigger underlying question: How connected are we in ways we still don't fully understand?

I believe it's far more than we think. The older I get, the more I believe openness matters. I believe in being open and willing to acknowledge maybe we don't yet have everything figured out.

Some of the most meaningful things in life can't be fully measured on a spreadsheet. Things such as connection, intuition, presence, peace, trust, and energy are all intangible and unmeasurable.

Yesterday reminded me how important it is to protect my energy, pay attention to what I consume at an emotional level, and intentionally surround myself with people who bring light instead of darkness and despair.

I think the world needs more light right now.

What are your thoughts on this matter? Have you ever felt someone's energy and immediately had the desire to spend more or less time with them? Have you ever left a conversation feeling completely drained...or completely inspired? Do you think the people around us shape our experiences more than we realize?

I think they do.
