Last Thursday afternoon, our doorbell rang, and I - naively assuming it was Amazon, as one would, opened the door to find my father-in-law standing on my doorstep. His RV parked in front of my house and everything he owns inside it. I had a fully scheduled weekend and no warning.
Brad, bless him, did know this visit was eventually (within the month) coming. Soooo...while we stood there greeting our guest, Brad was slightly prepared, and I was mourning my foiled dream of folding laundry in my pjs.
But hey, we are REALTORS. If we can't pivot on a dime, nobody can.
Did we toss our whole schedule for the weekend in the name of spontaneous hospitality? Nope. We sure didn't. We still worked (a lot). We still did laundry (albeit not as leisurely). We kept the yard from turning into a jungle of dry weeds and doggy drops. I even got a little girl-time in Friday night AND Sunday morning (THANK YOU, Ladies).

Yet, we somehow still found space for a few meals together, some good conversation, and precious time with the kids and their grandpa, whom they rarely get to see.
Was it ideal? No. Was it meaningful and very much welcomed? Absolutely!
It's funny how the "inconvenient" moments sometimes end up being the ones we remember the most. We never known when our last surprise drop-in might happen - or when we'll lose the luxury being able to spontaneously rearrange our lives to make room for more fun with those we love.
Don't get me wrong here, I'm not saying you should leave your doors unlocked and your calendar open for every pop-in relative (unless that's your thing...totally cool if it is). But I am saying it's ok to embrace the chaos...even just a little.
I say this because amidst the scheduling headaches and the surprise houseguests, there is something pretty magical about knowing you can make room when it matters.
Even if you were reallllly looking forward to a quiet work-at-home weekend.
We love you,
Kent! Thank you for showing up and giving us a great reason to shuffle our schedules and remember our priorities.
