“We do not learn from experience...we learn from reflecting on experience”

~ John Dewey, How We Think (1933)

Introduction:

As we stand on the cusp of a new year, there’s a natural urge to pause, look back, and gather the wisdom we gleaned from 2023. It's a moment to appreciate the highs, acknowledge the challenges, and assemble insights that shape our path ahead. Now, a bit about my journey of reflection and growth—a narrative that's both personal and universally resonant.

Reflecting on 2023:

In the rearview mirror of time, 2023 was a kaleidoscope of experiences. From joyful moments to unforeseen challenges, it was a year that etched lessons into the fabric of my soul.

It was a year of profound professional transformation — starting with a conscious decision to realign my life with priorities that echo my values. Amidst this pivotal shift, a crucial lesson emerged: the steadfast support of your people remains unwavering, even when professional landscapes evolve. My family, friends, and especially my steadfast partner, Brad, provided unwavering support during this transformative phase. I cannot thank you all enough for your love and support, through the good times and bad!

The loss of our dear companion, Midge, was a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with those we hold dear. Her return home, guided by prayers and community support, reminded me of the power of prayer, and never giving up. Now that she’s home, she’s unbelievably food motivated and driving me crazy – but at least she is home and safe. <3

In the spirit of everything happening for a reason, Marley would likely have never found his way into our family if Midge had not gone on her little adventure. He brings so much light and life into our world and we are forever grateful for the unexpected way our family became complete. A humbling lesson to seek and find the silver-lining in every experience.

Planning for Growth in 2024:

As I gaze upon the blank canvas of the year ahead, I force myself to identify those things I want to start, stop, or continue. Tech-time boundaries will mark the beginning—a commitment to fostering genuine connections in a world often ensnared by screens. These boundaries will start with me, as an example, and extend to my family.

Additionally, in the coming year, I'm making a heartfelt commitment to invest more time in philanthropic causes. For me, delving into philanthropy feels like returning home—a space where my soul finds solace. With reduced travel and the groundwork of our new business established, I'm excited to deepen my involvement with organizations that hold a special place in my heart. Joining Coloradans for Nebraska and Rotary was like rediscovering my roots, offering my heart a new meaningful purpose after stepping away from the cardiac space.

Finally, I acknowledge success is not the attainment of an end result; it is the journey to get to the end result. Self-reflection, once a yearly ritual, will now become a daily commitment—an introspective voyage to appreciate personal growth, recalibrate, and align with the person I aspire to be. I vow to dedicate time to celebrating the small victories and embracing the lessons hidden within my failures by reflecting and learning from them.

Conclusion:

Reflecting on 2023 acts as a beacon, guiding the trajectory of our aspirations in 2024. It’s a testament to the human spirit—of resilience, adaptability, and the persistent pursuit of growth. As we embark on this next chapter, let’s step forward, embracing change, celebrating progress, and savoring every step of the journey. At our core, we hold the compass to our purpose in this world. The real challenge lies in summoning the courage to walk the path that fulfills it.
